But if it has been eradicated from western countries there is no reason why it can't be eradicated from other countries also. In fact it's not even that hard. The UN has estimated the cost at 80 billion and that is less the US spends on their defence budget (439 billion). There will always be comparative poverty, that is there will always be people who have below average compared to their contemporaries. However, Nelson is not talking about this. He is talking about extreme poverty, the kind of poverty where you are so poor you starve to death. Extreme poverty can be eradicated.
