Gnostics held that the physical world was a distraction from Self awareness, and that sense perception was largely inadequate in our seach for knowledge. They certainly weren't the nihilists you describe. Everything that we see and experience physically is limited by the abillity of the five senses to objectively observe the WHOLE universe. They never applied gender to this definition. Sophia, the feminine archetype which was the inspiration for almost every 'Mother Goddess' in human history, was perhaps the most important part of the Gnostic myth. I would suggest reading Carl Jung's work "Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious" for a deeper understanding of Gnostic thought. __________________________________________________

Gnostics respected the true femenine, the archetypal feminine which exists in the unconscious. Nature has nothing to do with it.
