I think I first heard the Percy Sledge version, that came closely after James Carr's. It actually charted sometime later by Archie Campbell and someone else whose name I forget--that's the C&W charts, by the way. And when you open those two arenas for cheatin' songs, that brings numerous contenders. Still, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham probably combined as much dignity, guilt and fear into one set of lyrics as ever was.

Yeah, I love this song. Also great cheating numbers " Let's just kiss and say goodbye." It's so oddly paced, but I love it. And, who could forget, "Me and Mrs. Jones" (They got a thing goin' on.) Peace!

Taste is taste I know, but then there's stupidity, and Tsull123's comment is number one with a bullet. If this isn't the greatest cheating song ever it's close, and has been done not just by the FBB, but brilliantly by James Carr, Clarence Carter, Richard and Linda Thompson, and many others . As for "profound lyrical content" (god what a clumsy phrase), it captures the guilt and passion of an affair exquisitely, and the rhymes are natural and unforced.

I love this version. I know it has really nothing to do with break ups, but I must have played this on a loop 20 times during my first break-up (longg time ago). The bittersweet melody just resonated with me and it was quite conforting. Boring is subjective, and if it does bore you, well dont waste your time and move on...
